Richard Moss writes about emerging science and technology and shares untold or neglected stories about the people, ideas, cultures, histories, and communities behind video games. With every new game in the genre going forward, we can only hope that this time, finally, we get the joy-the celebration-of racing go-karts in a colorful, cartoony, whimsical fantasy world without the accompanying disappointment that yet again they've screwed something up. There's still a place for the kart racer, though, as exemplified by the success of Mario Kart 8. At the time of writing, it remains the highest-selling Wii U game and offers loads of fun in spite of its continued reliance on luck and rubber-banding. Console development is too expensive today for most companies to justify a quick-and-dirty generic kart racer, and the genre doesn't resonate as much on mobile-where licensed games tend to fall into three categories: Hay Day clones, Clash of Clans clones, and city builders packed with in-app purchases. The game itself is exceptional-perhaps the best in the series, thanks to gorgeous HD graphics, top-notch course design, the aforementioned patches and DLC, and less strident rubber-banding, although it's too soon to say for sure.īeyond these games, there's no longer a great deal of kart fluff.

Mario Kart 8 (2014) on the Wii U has downloadable content and patches-one of which included a blistering 200cc mode-and support for voice chat (between races only), plus customizable tournament rules and YouTube integration. The mobile versions of Sonic & Sega: All Stars Racing and Garfield Kart are worth mentioning as good, derivative fun, though, as are Steampunk Racing 3D-which put a neo-Victorian spin on the genre-and Beach Buggy Blitz-which has procedurally generated tracks and handles better than most console kart racers.įurther Reading Mario Kart 8 review: One step forward, one step backBut at long last, Nintendo recently fully embraced the online realm. The larger screens of post-iPhone smartphones proved a better option for the genre, but here the twin problems of iOS shovelware and generic kart racer design combined to make nearly everything instantly forgettable. It had most of the features of the PS2 version, but its tiny, ultra-narrow field of view was sickening. Crash Nitro Kart's 2004 port to Nokia's N-Gage phone-cum-games-machine didn't fare so well.

It had simple but attractive 3D graphics, several racers, a dozen tracks, 10 power ups, Bluetooth multiplayer, and both tournament and time trial modes.

Released in 2002 for Nokia Series 60 feature phones (you know-those little old things with postage stamp screens that didn't respond to taps or swipes), MGS Karting looked the part of a handheld kart racer.
